The National President of Parents Teachers Association (PTA), Alhaji Haruna Danjuma, has called on the state and federal government to protect teachers and students from kidnappers by providing adequate security to schools.
This is coming at the heels of the Federal Government’s recent directive for schools to reopen today, Monday, 12th October 2020.
Danjuma made the call in a statement he issued on Monday, in Kaduna.
He said that the increasing security challenges in the country have made it imperative for the provision of adequate security personnel to be made.
He further said that the safety of teachers and their students should be the top priority for the government.
The PTA President also noted that schools in rural areas should be given priority as most attacks by bandits were perpetrated in rural communities.
He further advised the management of the various schools to adhere to COVID-19 protocols as their students resume, so as to avoid a second wave of the coronavirus attack.
While appealing to traditional and religious leaders, non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders to monitor schools and initiate ways to protect students and teachers in their communities, he stated that the PTA would collaborate with the police, civil defence corps, vigilantes and other security services to ensure the security of schools nationwide.
His words, “We must support the education of our children and we must join hands toward making them have enabling environment for their studies,” he said.
Danjuna noted that the six months closure of schools due to coronavirus pandemic has caused a serious setback in the educational sector, especially the young children in rural areas.
He, therefore, said that teachers must commit themselves to leverage the situation through incisive teaching and revision so that they can be able to make up for the time lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
