The Imo State Governor, Sen. Hope Uzodinma yesterday said that his administration will support any punishment for those who engage in rape and other gender-based violence in the state.

The State Governor, represented by Barr. Nnamdi Anyahe, the Chief of Staff, Government House Owerri, stated this when the women’s wing of the Trade Union Congress of the State Chapter staged a peaceful protest on rape and gender violence against women.

Sen. Uzodinma described rape as a crime against humanity which must be erased and maintained that he would support the strategies put in place to stop the increase in rape activities.

Earlier, the Chairperson of the group, Mrs Judge Onyemachi explained that the women wing of T.U.C proceeded on the campaign with the aim of drawing the attention of the citizens and the State Government to see the need for severe punishment on rapists.

She, therefore, called on the government to do all they can to stop the ugly activities of rapists.

Mrs Onyemachi also encouraged victims to always speak out and contact relevant authorities.

The Senior Special Assistant to the State Governor on Public Enlightenment, Mr Stamford Nwokedi said the campaign was part of efforts to inform and educate the general public on the need to end rape and gender-based violence.
