Argentine and Barcelona forward, Lionel Andrés Messi Cuccittini, reached yet another milestone in his already illustrious career.
The six-times world footballer of the year became the first player in the history of La Liga to score 20 goals and provide 20 assists in a single season.
He achieved this feat in Barcelona’s 1- 0 win against Real Valladolid at the Jose Zorrilla Stadium, the home ground of Valladolid.
The 33-year-old became only the second player after Thierry Henry to score and assist twenty plus goals in a season in the 21st century across any of Europe’s top leagues.
So far this season, the little magician has managed to score 22 goals and he has assisted 20 for his teammates in as many as 31 league games.
Leo Messi’s 15th-minute assist for Arturo Vidal goal secured all three points for the Catalan club in their belated title chase.
The win means that Barcelona is now one point behind league leaders Real Madrid who have played a game less. With two league games remaining for Barcelona, they would have to win and hope that leaders Real Madrid drop points in any or all of their remaining fixtures.
